Hey guys,
Yesterday was an awesome day of flying. I arrived at the field about 1:15PM. It was great to see so many of our members, and it was refreshing that Freddy Gana brought two prospective new members. However, the highlight of my day was seeing Captain Juan Ortegon solo both of his airplanes. Juan is a unique individual. He is a pilot for Net Jets, and he flies the Gulfstream Jet. However, properly getting into RC is difficult, if not impossible, on your own, and his experience was further complicated by a hobby shop that sold him the wrong equipment for hundreds of dollars more than he should have paid.
With the frustrations of faulty equipment, and poor quality instruction, he eventually stayed away from the hobby after many failures. However, since I lost my medical certificate, I am now always home when he is not flying. Therefore, I decided to have Juan bring all is equipment to my shop. I evaluated what he had. Ordered what he needed, repaired what was broken, and then worked him very hard until he successfully soloed.
Here is the point. We now have another capable RC member in our club. Therefore, let's make an effort to reach out to those who are interested in this sport. Without proper assistance, beginners will leave this sport like rats off a sinking ship. If someone asks you for advice, give it to them and make the effort to help others succeed. I also am thankful for John Phief who has been working with his student Gary.
Yet, while the day ended on a flying happy note, it is also sad that I had to say "good-bye" to so many of our winter Texans who will be leaving this week and next. We also have long time member Bob Burnett who is moving to New Braunfels, TX. He was one member who helped many learn to fly and assisted in repairs for newcomers. I certainly appreciate what the Winter Texans and Bob have done to promote our hobby.
I have prayed that everyone has a safe trip as you return home, and I will eagerly look forward to your arrival in the fall. Let's make an effort to have a successful flying demonstration for the City of San Juan, a Tejas RC goal, in October. God Bless everyone and thanks for your individual great effort. Sadly, it was an abbreviated flying season because of the club problems that are now behind us.
On another note, and if anyone is interested, I will now plan on mowing the runway this Thursday. Anyone with a weed-eater and blower is welcomed to join me. I will be there by 10:00AM.
