Cheap & Effective Engine Cleaner « Thread Started on Aug 3, 2009, 12:05pm »
I've been a modeler since the mid 1940's Yep, that's a long time to be sure and I have used glo engines since the late 40's and there is one thing that sooner or later will start to appear on a well used glo engine....lots of dirt & old castor oil that has turned to a hardened grimey crud or a hard baked brown to black varnish coating. The engine(s) looks ugly and more than likely overheat causing you unecessary pain, consternation & anguish. Over the years, I've used several different products to attempt removal of crap & crud on my model engines and have had mixed results with some of the products, some were very caustic and dangerous and others just flat don't work as claimed, some of the products you may recoginze; Demon Kleen, anti freeze, automotive carb cleaner(s), brake cleaner(s), steel wool, acetones, lacquer thinners....the list goes on and on and on and not one of those items is very effective at cleaning or restoring the original look to a glo engine....That is, until now !!
There is a product that is available on your grocer's shelf that really gets the job done and leaves a glo engine sparkling and spiffy clean as if it were brand new, DAWN POW'R DISSOLVER . Yep, it's made by the same folks that make DAWN Dishwashing liquid, but you won't find it in the liquid soap isle, it's located over in the floor cleaning isle.
I first heard of the product via a model magazine, then while visiting a modeling friend he showed me various model engines in his collection that used to be caked with baked on varnish, grimey crud & crap---they looked as if they were brand spanking new. I became excited and asked what he had used...it was DAWN POW'R DISSOLVER....Spray a bit on the dirty engine, agitate it a bit with an old toothbrush or acid brush and let sit for 15 minutes...wash off with warm water, then shake dry and re oil the engine...The engine will look as if it were brand spanking new and as a bonus, run cooler Use it on some of your wife's Revere Ware coooking pans or popcorn popper...it's amazing stuff !!

Just to let everyone know, as of this date- October 24, 2009, I am receiving in my email box all kinds of queries about where to purchase or find Dawn Power Dissolver...If you haven't used it yet...you are really missing out on a wonderfully safe and effective product...
I've recently tested DPD on two old CL engines that had lain in my model box for more than 35 years. They were encrusted with engine varnish and other crap n' 'crud' ... The Dawn product cleaned up the exterior of both engines and they once again looked almost new...WOW !!
You get it in the floor care department at your local HEB or hardware store...I've even found it at Wal Mart...Sadly, Home Depot nor Lowes carries this wonderful product...
